Ischia : history

HISTORY OF THE ISLAND OF ISCHIA

Ischia, an island of volcanic origin, is the largest island in the Bay of Naples.

It is divided into six towns : Ischia port, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Serrara Fontana and Barano d’Ischia.

The overall population is about 60,000 inhabitants. Ischia lies about 14.8 km from the mainland.Ischia has been inhabited since time immemorial.

The first definite historical traces are found with the Greeks who founded a colony where Lacco Ameno now is, in about 800BC, and established a flourishing ceramic industry. The island was then called Pithecusa.

Hundreds of years later, the Romans landed, discovered the hot springs and founded the first thermae. The island was then called Aenaria. From 1000AD the island became known as Ischia and was ruled successively by the Byzantines, Saracens, Normans, Spanish and the French Bourbons until the unification of Italy in 1860.
